Long time no post, eh?

I started this year with a great many plans, and most of them have fallen to the wayside. As soon as I returned from my great Washington DC adventure, we discovered one of my aunts had breast cancer again, and my mother's MS took a sharp turn I've been waiting 28 years for but was still unprepared to face. Knowing your entire life that your mom has a shorter expiration date than most is difficult, but realizing that date is fast approaching...

I don't know if I'll make my goal at getyourwords out. But for all the hell the past few months, it is amazing to say that yes, I'm still writing. It isn't as much or as good as I wanted, but I'm still writing. And that's the only victory I can ask for at this point.

Well, that and actually finishing this piece for rarewomen. But hey, next month is birthday month, and magic always happens in April. <3

First of all, I just wanted to say thank you for enjoying one (or more!) of the ladies I requested! I hope you have a blast with this, because I'm super stoked to see what comes out of this challenge :D. If you'd like to explore more about me, my tumblr is here.

Bulletproof Glees: Feelings! Friendships that define one another. AUs that explore what changes about a character in vastly different circumstances... or what remains the same. Character growth! Strength in unconventional ways.

Triggers/Things I tend to avoid reading: Extreme embarrassment (I have a HUGE embarrassment squick). Victim blaming or character bashing to elevate another character in the narrative. Any toeing the consent line. Ableism or poking fun at mental illness. Unending bleakness (I'm perfectly fine with going dark, but I prefer narratives that also allow room for hope things might get better).

Requests:

Batman (Comics) - Stephanie Brown. Hope & joy born of Gotham's dark streets.

I love Stephanie Brown. Honestly anything you want to write for Stephanie is going to make me happy, but anything that showcases her hope and joy and determination to continue on even with how screwed up Gotham (and her family) is? Yeah, I'm going to freak out in happiness. I adore her Batgirl's run, the extended cast, & the dynamics it hinted at with the rest of the batfam.

Large Fandom: The Hunger Games- Foxface, Annie Cresta, Johanna Mason. Who are these ladies? How did the games change them?

Dark Angel - Max. After the finale, Max bears upon her shoulders the weight of the transgenics. How has this changed her? Her relationships? Her found family?
And oh, poor Atlas
The world’s a beast of a burden
You’ve been holding on a long time
And all this longing
And the ships are left to rust
That’s what the water gave us
-Florence + The Machine, What The Water Gave Us
I'm late to the game with Dark Angel, having just discovered it last month, but I devoured both seasons in a week and desperately want more Max. ALL THE MAX FOR ME. But Dark Angel is a very dead fandom, so it is difficult finding pieces that focus on Max herself. As much as I dived into the Max/Alec ship, I definitely wanted more pieces that focused on Max herself.

Because what drew me in with Dark Angel was Max, her story, her fight. Her sass and determination and gray ethics (particularly when it comes to stealing!), how she's almost addicted to found families, be it those she creates for herself or those she inspires in others. Her refusals to give any inch of her agency, to keep fighting even when the odds are pretty damn grim. I love her vulnerabilities and how she doesn't make apologies for them and how, to me, that just makes her embody strength in even more fascinating ways than just being able to kick ALL the ass.

And I fricken adore her friendship with Original Cindy.

I wish Dark Angel had lasted more than two seasons-- I would have loved to see how Max grew with her friendships and how her story ended. How Terminal City changed her, just as it did Joshua & Alec.

I've been thinking a lot about my writing the past six months, and I've come to realize a couple of things.

Particularly, I never wanted to be a writer as a kid. I dreamed of more practical occupations (doctor, to fix my mother;mayor, to fix my town; fighter pilot, to save everyone). Two cousins very close to me growing up wanted nothing more than to sit at their typewriters and dream of being Lois Lanes at the tender ages of five and six, but words and I had a different relationship. I had great difficulty reading as a child, so words couldn't be captured at those matching typewriters. Couldn't be captured like that. I couldn't be like that. Words, to me, all came down to music.

I've always had a powerful connection to music, particularly to lyrics. Words to me are breath, spirit, alive-- not dead marks on cheap paper. I fancied myself a song writer at the age of five, scribbling lines and lyrics on napkins and table clothes and walls, anything that would hold the clever sounds I transformed into a pretty string for all to admire.  When i moved to Oregon and fell in a group of aspiring writers, I was always the one on the edge; I was no writer, I protested, that was everyone else. I was just the one humming my words as I tossed them into jagged lines of poetry. Even in high school, when I won a spot in a state writing challenge four years in a row, I never thought myself one of them. When I fell into fanfiction, it was never about transforming, just a way to get the words out, feelings I could no longer feel comfortable speaking into existence, releasing the pressures on my soul so that I may continue on, unburdened.

Events conspired in college, ones that firmly set me in the path of becoming a writer. I could no longer write verse, the words of a harsh professor ripping the verse from my mouth. Poetry had been my breath and I allowed myself to asphyxiate. But I fell into fanfiction and roleplaying and Nanowrimo, and somehow, words changed. They became fixed creatures, black strokes etched deeply into white canvas. I never noticed that my best writing always came when I voiced out the scene as I tapped out the words, unconsciously stringing those pretty words together much as I had as a child, as a teen, as a poet.

But I ceased this habit after college and my connection to the words fell. The fast few years have been a struggle to get the words out. To sit down and let anything come out but frustration and garbled, misshapen words barely hanging together coherently. There was no craft to any of it, just anger and pain and the realization that this is not worth it, that I can no longer say that I am a writer, that I have failed. That this is better done by everyone else but me so what is the point?

I thought a great deal about giving up writing in 2012. Then Yuletide happened, and as the last night of writing transitioned from one of the worst experiences with writing I've ever had to me lurching over the keyboard at 3am, whispering the lovely lines my mind was finally giving me, stringing together words that I could be proud of once reveals came, it came back to me why I started writing again. Why I came to love it and find so much value in it.

I'm never going to be someone who writes to become Lois Lane, to change the world from their typewriter. I use this medium to make a song out of paper, to use the words as instruments to make the reader feel what drives me, to connect in the same way music and life has connected with me. I never managed to create my own song with any of the instruments I tootled with over the years, but damned if I haven't created one hell of a playlist with my words.

I've run the entire emotional gambit with this Yuletide and I'm proud to say that I hung in there and wrote something. Something another person not only enjoyed, but changed their perception of the original canon because of something I wrote. Yuletide is proving that my decision to re-devote myself to my writing this approaching year is clearly a good thing.

But I do have to say, it is a struggle to think of what to write these days. I'm unsure if RP, fanfiction, or original pieces should be my focus-- I've little inspiration for any still, but I mostly blame the lazy brain that hasn't used that piece of the puzzle in far too long.

To that end, I'm thinking of keeping an inspiration journal for 2012. Not sure how to set up the contents, but I'm thinking a Moleskin sketchbook maybe perfect, since most of my ideas are storyboards anyway. HM.

Yuletide:
Ug, the last episode of Once Upon A Time completely jossed my Yuletide story. Thankfully I have Tuesday-Wednesday off to try and scrap together a new fic at the last minute. I should have known offering to write for a fandom that was still on the air would be dicey *___*. At least this fic doesn't have to be to be epic length.

31 days:
There are a few prompts for this month I've got inklings for already and thankfully they are all for days late in the month for a change! 24. her shadow ripples back to shore (Kingdom, Reed -> Lynn), 28. I am not what I used to be (Neve; Kingdom, FMA!AU), 30. it's a monster we've created ourselves (Kingdom, Guardians -> Brian), and 31. The world ends with two words (Kingdom, Mara -> Deon).

Overdue Projects:
  • Unbirthday drabbles!
    • Catching Los Gigantes: Kingdom (spoilers) AU, Mara & Dusty
    • Deadline At First Light: Kingdom Noir AU, Mara Val & Alice
    • Don't Upset The Rhythm: Kingdom Soul Eater AU, Bros & Lynn

  • Highlights: By far, the Hunger Games trilogy were the books that most influenced me this year. FEELINGS EXPLOSIONS EVERYWHERE. I wish someone on my flist would read the books so I can spit out all my feelings for Katniss and Peeta and Gale and Haymitch and that damned cat  ;______:. The Leviathan books were also amazing! And Silk is for Seduction had arguably my favorite female lead in YEARS.
  • Lowlights: The Lady Most Likely was one of the most infuriating reads I've suffered in a while. Books with three narrative threads written by different authors have been enjoyable reads in the past, but this one was so disjointed it was ridiculous and I intensely disliked two of the three couples. As much as I adore Julia Quinn novels, this one was a train wreck I'm sorry I laid eyes on.

  40. The Great Muppet Caper ★★★ (I can't believe I'd never seen this *__*)
  • Highlights: I have to divide these up into categories. For Feelings Explosions & Spending Half The Movie Tearbending? The Muppets & HP. For entirely unexpected fangasms? Batman: Under the Red Hood & Sorcerer's Apprentice (the latter has become a top movie OF ALL TIME so deep are my feelings for this stupid movie!).  For Documentaries That Inspired Me? Conan & Waking Sleeping Beauty. And then there is MOVIE OF MY HEART aka THOR aka THE MOVIE THAT DID ALL OF THE ABOVE.  I re-watched it with my mom last month and holy cats, I spent the whole climax of the movie in tears. IT ISN'T FUNNY MOM, THIS IS A STORY ABOUT BROTHERS AND FEELINGS AND LADIES BEHING AWESOME AND SCIENCE AND CRAPPY FATHERS AND THOR IS TOTALLY CODED AS A GOLDEN RETRIEVER AND YOU'LL NEVER CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE. I have feelings, okay?
  • Lowlights: I was forced to watch Little Fockers in theaters, because my mom decided it would be her birthday movie. Ug. Ug. UGGG. I give it half of a star only because I love Barbra Streisand & Dustin Hoffman as crazy marrieds. I can't say that Green Lantern was a lowlight because it put me to sleep two of the three times I tried to watch it. WATCHMAN WAS THE WORST MOVIE OF ALL TIME, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been because Sage was in the other room making fun of me the whole time it was on (and helped me keep my sanity when I couldn't handle the icky any longer).

Re-Watches:
  1. The Proposal
  2. That Old Feeling
  3. X-men
  4. Charlie's Angels
  5. Emma
  6. Tangled
